St. Nicholas, the special children's saint, is honoured throughout Austria. It is said that God rewarded Nicholas' generosity by allowing him to return to earth each year to bring gifts to all the good children. St. Nicholas comes on his, a special holiday apart from Christmas. In Maria Alm the evening starts with St Nicholas handing out gifts to the good children, but look out, if you have been naughty! The next to arrive in a blaze of flames and flares are the Krampus, the jangling of their cow bells is terrifying they walk in and around the crowd whipping any one they can get their hands on.
